Sustainability, environment and climate

What does sustainable development mean?

What does it mean that something is sustainable, and what is sustainable development? You have probably heard the term many times, but do you really know what is meant by something sustainable?

What does it mean that something is sustainable, and what is sustainable development?

You have probably heard the term many times, but do you really know what is meant by something sustainable?

Sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the current generation without reducing the opportunities for future generations to meet their needs.”

Ref Brundtland Commission. Sustainable development is a plan for the future, for the planet and everyone who lives here.

That plan is that we must act in a way that makes the world a better place for all people living now, without ruining those who come later.

To find out if something is sustainable, you can ask yourself:

– Can we do this over and over again forever and ever?

Sustainable development is having three thoughts in your head at once:

1. Climate and Environment
2. Economy
3. Social conditions

Climate and Environment

First, we must take care of the planet. We have many natural ecosystems that must be in balance to be able to live here.

The climate system is one of them and it ensures that the temperature is right and that the atmosphere is released just right with solar energy. When we emit dangerous greenhouse gases such as CO2 clog the atmosphere and the temperature of the earth changes. It affects how we develop.

How we store and develop energy affects us. Oil, gas and coal are energy we can run out of. Water, wind and sun, on the other hand, are there forever. Using the renewable energy sources that renew themselves is good for the planet and can provide jobs for more people for many years.

Economy

Almost everything we develop, buy or exchange comes from nature. The smarter we develop the natural resources and the better system we create to distribute between us, the more sustainable the development.

One way to do this is to think more about what we buy and how it is made. A football, for example, travels far before it reaches the football players. First they have to make the materials one country, then they have to print the logo and color it in a completely different place. Before a third country sews it all together. A single football sees the whole world before it sees goals. This journey helps to bind us together. If we are to win the battle for a sustainable future, we must play by fair rules that apply to everyone.

Social conditions

We humans are part of nature, but also important resources for the world, just like water, forests and sun.

We have heads that can create the most wonderful things. For us to be able to be the best version of ourselves. then there are some things that are extra important. Like having equal opportunities for school, security, food and medicine. It provides greater opportunities for us humans, but also for the planet. We just have to think of new ways.

These three thoughts must work together and at the same time, it is sustainable development. There is a plan for this and all the countries in the UN have agreed on a plan for sustainable development. For it to work, you need cooperation, and that you are involved.
